What is The Indo Newsletter?

First of all, thanks for visiting The Indo Newsletter’s Substack or Instagram page, or subscribing to it if you have. My name is Oka, a journalism student in Melbourne. I’ve created this newsletter project as an attempt to cater information for Indonesians who live in Australia, or anyone who is interested in Indonesia.

I imagine The Indo as a micro-scale news outlet that is run to serve a very specific audience. While Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest and biggest neighbours, there are barely 100,000 Indonesians in this whole country-continent, and that’s why Indonesia and Indonesians are very much underrepresented in Australian mainstream media. This newsletter project aims to tackle that by becoming a platform to bring more Indonesians and stories about Indonesia to the fore.

Moving forward, you can expect at least one story every week on Indonesian and Australian politics that affect the lives of Indonesians Down Under. I will also bring you stories on everyday people and their connections to Australia’s biggest and closest neighbour up north. News stories are meant to make you feel connected and help you understand the world around you, and I’ll do my best to do that.

Why subscribe?

Because it’s gonna be free for a long while.

At this very initial stage, all I need is motivation to write more. After all, what encouraged me to start this publication is my thirst of freedom to write and publish anything. Your moral support is all I need to get stories out more regularly. Thank you!
